Huguette Caland fait partie de la génération d'artistes qui, avec Shafic Abboud, Yvette Achkar, et Helen Khal, ont été  les acteurs principaux de la scène artistique libanaise après l'indépendance. Ils ont façonné l'identité artistique de leur jeune pays. Tous ont étudié et travaillé en Europe ou aux Etats-Unis et ont été grandement influencés par les courants artistiques qu'ils ont découvert là-bas. Mais tous sont restés attachés à leur pays et leur patrimoine et dans leurs œuvres, se reflète toujours leur culture d’origine.

Cette exposition célèbre 50 ans d'une carrière prolifique dans le domaine des arts et une immense production de dessins, peintures, sculptures, et vêtements conçus par l'artiste Huguette Caland. Plus de 200 œuvres de la collection de l'artiste et de collectionneurs d'art libanais seront présentées, soulignant 3 périodes différentes de la carrière de l’artiste:

 

Kaslik 1964 – 1970

L'artiste a commencé sa carrière avec les peintures érotiques abstraites et des paysages corporels. Pour Huguette Caland, au cours des années soixante-dix, l'anatomie humaine était le sujet principal de ses tableaux, mais traitée d'une manière libre, très animée et ludique, avec les têtes d'un côté, et le sexe de l'autre. C'est une période où elle  explorait la perception de son propre corps, l'anatomie humaine, et les interactions physiques. Cette liberté inhabituelle dans l'art du Moyen-Orient nous rappelle des artistes occidentaux comme Niki de Saint Phalle.

Paris 1970 – 1987

A Paris, elle a rencontré de nombreux artistes et écrivains et elle a illustré de nombreux livres, notamment pour Adonis et Andrée Chedid. Elle a rencontré aussi le sculpteur Georges Apostu et a commencé à travailler avec lui en trois dimensions. Elle a produit une série de sculptures et a continué sa peinture. Elle a également conçu une ligne de vêtements avec Pierre Cardin.

 

Californie 1988 – présent

Au cours des vingt dernières années, le travail de Huguette Caland a atteint sa maturité et elle a acquis une reconnaissance au Moyen-Orient, aux Etats-Unis et en Europe où son œuvre fait maintenant partie de nombreuses collections muséales et privées. Elle travaille maintenant sur sa toile comme s'il s'agissait d'un monde qu'elle crée, où la distance est faussée, les espaces élargis, et sa mémoire transformée en un tapis. Ses œuvres récentes parlent souvent de ses souvenirs d'enfance au Liban.
