Born in Beirut, where he currently resides, Moukarzel started his photographic career at the age of fifteen, at the beginning of the Lebanese civil war. Showing great interest in war photography, Moukarzel worked as a photojournalist for fifteen years at the Sygma agency, followed by a stint at Reuters, where he was chief reporter for their East Beirut offices.
In parallel to these activities, he started running a fashion photography studio and also produced advertising, architecture and interior design photo-shoots. He now works under a photography production house called minime. Moukarzel exhibits art and documentary photography since 1995. Travelling throughout Lebanon and around the world, he seeks to showcase the multiple facets of humankind in dialogue with its environment. In his portraits and landscapes, Moukarzel explores the themes of ethnic and cultural heritage. Showing beauty in the sometimes ugly, he celebrates cultural diversity and the profusion of sounds, colours and perfumes around the world.
Moukarzel regularly shows his work in Lebanon, France and the Middle East. He has been featured in many international publications and published photography books. He was also the recipient of several photography prizes, including Reuters Worldwide’s Photograph of the Year (1987), Paris Match’s Best Photographer Prize (1989), the Lebanon UNDP’s Media Award for Sustainable Development (2000), and the Pikasso d’Or advertising prize (2003 and 2004).
