Born in Beirut and educated in the U.A.E, England, Canada and the United States, Elias Maamari is a conceptual artist working mainly in the realm of public art and focusing specifically on the theme of unconscious perception. He specialises in light installations dealing with neon, cold cathode, and LED’s. His works make reference to the human perception of existence in space (here) and time (now) and engage the viewer to reflect on his or her perception of these dimensions. Maamari also criticizes the constant bombardment of advertising enticing us to (over)consume and the subliminal messages they contain.
He has exhibited at Scope Basel in 2009, and in 2010 at the City Centre cinema in Beirut and the Slick 10 Art Fair in Paris.
